The Secret Behind Motivation

John's Picture

Some people seemed to have a lot of motivation when they went to college. They knew exactly what they wanted to do and when and how they wanted to do it.

But that was not me.

I went to college because it seemed like the "right thing to do." I wanted to achieve something only I really didn’t know what. I didn't even want to make a lot of money.

After two years of general liberal arts I had to pick a major. I thought I would try psychology, so I could learn how the mind works. But after one semester I found that psychology didn't really cover how the mind works so staying in school seemed kind of pointless.

I dropped out and became eligible for the draft during the Vietnam War. So I managed to get a Conscientious Objector status requiring that I serve “in the public interest” for a period of two years in lieu of military service.

I ended up working at a mental hospital, because thought it would be interesting to see how the professionals handled people since they were the ones who should know how the mind works.

Well, it was interesting to see how psychiatrists operate. About all they did was feed people drugs, and generally related to the patients less well than even I could.

It didn’t seem there was much to learn there. The environment was less than inspirational, to say the least.

At this point in my life I was still lacking motivation. What to do?

Put everything into a career? Put one’s energies into having and raising a family? Work for the good of mankind?

During this time I met this guy. We smoked some pot and played some music together. He was a real pothead. If he didn’t smoke two or three times a day he became ill.

Then one day, later on, I ran into him again and he had completely changed.

He told me that he had gotten into Scientology and that he didn’t smoke pot any longer.

I was impressed. I knew nothing about Scientology but figured there had to be something to it if this guy had stopped smoking pot.

He then asked me, “Do you read?”, and sold me a copy of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, which I started working through right away.

I immediately began having new realizations.

My question about where one was supposed to find motivation was answered, and the book helped me to answer, for myself, other things that had puzzled me for a long time.

I began to understand people better, especially my parents. My relationships started going better and, most importantly, the whole rundown in Dianetics of how the mind works made sense to me.

It gave me a new viewpoint. I found that there actually was a way to sort out the insanities that life presented. This was something that I could actually think with.

When I got some Dianetic counseling called "auditing". I was not disappointed. It was all I hoped it would be.

Longstanding upsets blew away.

I was so relieved to find that there really was a true science of the mind and that it could be used to improve one’s condition.

Understanding some basic things about what was going on in life gave me more motivation to live it well.

I found I could really help people with Dianetics. That gave me more purpose and with purpose came motivation and it came easily.

I went on to become trained as a Dianetic Auditor and I have helped hundreds of people with the application of its technology.

I am grateful for L. Ron Hubbard’s development of Dianetics and am thrilled with my discovery of it.

I suggest you get a copy of this book. Read it and you will never be the same again.

And feel free to email me with any questions about Dianetics or if you just could use some help.
