Self Help Story from Peggy Wiley
In 1967, I was a supervisor at Northwest Airlines reservation office in New York City. Among my duties was the training of new employees on how to talk on the phone and help the callers get their reservations made. Into my class one day came a woman I took an immediate liking for, Marta White. She was of a size where she could carry her stand-up bass on the subway to a gig. We talked at lunches and one day, she asked me "You're a very good teacher. How would you like to be better?" I said "Yes! I would like that." She said she was in this group called Scientology. Now, I knew she had come from California and I 'knew' that California was full of fruits and nuts. I said "Oh, Marta, if there's one thing I don't need, it's a California cult!" She laughed and I laughed. She then explained what the word Scientology meant--KNOWING HOW TO KNOW. I asked "Knowing how to know what?" She said "Well, what would you like to know?" No one had ever asked that of me before, so I thought a bit and then said "I want to know everything!" She said "OK." I said "You mean that in this group, I can know everything?" She looked me dead in the eye and simply said "yes." I said "Well, then I'm IN--for eternity." And I was and I am. I have continued on my journey to Know Everything ever since then and the journey has been fantastic. I have found out things I never would have even known to ask about earlier. Peggy Wiley
